about

I'd heard that interim prime minister Bill English had said no-one wakes up thinking about climate change, like it wasn't anyone's first concern. I thought he must not be waking from climate nightmares the way I was all the time, at that time. This particular composition came from a nightmare about how we are giving the last of our water to our desperate canine companions, even as we all die out from extreme heat and drought. -- CW

lyrics

We put you, we put you,
we put you In the Earth
with these digging hands
in ways we have nearly forgot

How to dig
How to sing
How to howl

A-oooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooo

The dogs remind us
we are here, only here
And when it rains,
it RAINS

The Earth swallows and breathes
In places we know it will be dry
because we cannot hold it well

And the dogs remind us,
DRINK
like it’s your last
every time
Drink it all

And when you run, RUN
with every bone loose
and every tendon singing,
I am alive and I run

A-oooooooooooooooooooo
Ooooooooooooooooo

We are runners
We are breathers
We are pray-ers
We are here, only here

This river
This day
This Earth

It is now
It is now
